Brushes designed specifically for large canvases (spalters) were created to permit working from a greater distance without sacrificing control and finesse. Brushes for the needs of fresco painters, who had to cover large, often abrasive surfaces, were also created. The wear and tear on fresco brushes demanded that they be economical, and the distance required of spalters demanded fine balance and control.
