Leuchtturm 1917 Master Classic A4+ notebook

Posted by KN on Jan 26th 2024

Trying to find a good notebook with at least 250 pages of heavy-weight paper for fountain pens is extremely difficult, let alone anything with wide enough lines to write in. The only reason I got the A4+ Master Classic is for the line spacing: 8mm. I need to SEE what I write & anything under 8mm no longer works for me. And I'm tired of cheap paper in wide-lined composition notebooks & other variants in mass marketing. I like the A4+ size- a BIG notebook. It's the same width as a current notebook I'm using (the last of its kind unfortunately) but 1.25 inches taller. The cover is not what I'd call a hard cover, I don't like any amount of flex. It's a pity this size is not offered in the colors all the other sizes are available in, like ink, salmon, dark green, etc. Just black. Ho hum. Heavy duty end papers, good. The paper is nice for fountain pens although I haven't used anything bigger than a fine point nib. I do wish the paper was heavier, like 120 lb. or greater. What irks me more than anything is the number of sheets/pages that companies put in their notebooks. 235 pages--really? And the backside of page 235 isn't even lined! Why? What a waste! They can't put in 125 sheets to give you a 250-page workable journal? How about 300 or 400, or even 500 pages? As it is, with only 235 pages, I will breeze through it in a about 3 months, an expensive journal. This particular notebook has 118 sheets/236 pages (although the last page is neither numbered nor lined). Of these 118 sheets, the last 8 sheets are perforated. As a journalist, I would no more tear a page or partial page out of a journal than mess with a polar bear! It's just not done, it's an outright sacrilege to me. If you're in the habit of tearing out bits for notes, I suggest keeping a cheap notepad on hand, but don't use a beautiful notebook to do it. The little extra things are nice if you're more into that sort of stuff, but I don't need labels, ribbon markers, table of contents pages, etc.; although the pocket in the back is most helpful. Page numbers in the lower outside corner I've not come across before, nor a date line at the top of each page (but I think that will become useful). A simple, 8mm lined, 400-page book is more useful to me in the long run. If I cannot find anything else out there in 8mm ruling, then I guess I'll stick to the A4+ Master Classic. Maybe as I get into using it, I'll change my tune about the being shorted on the number of pages it has. But it really is a nice notebook.
